Who We Are

The Gainesville Naturalist Society is a community-based organization for anyone drawn to the natural world. Whether you're a seasoned birder, a casual hiker, or someone who just picked up a wildflower guide for the first time, you'll find your people here.

We organize regular group hikes, field trips, and outings across North Central Florida and beyond. Members share knowledge on plant and animal identification, discuss conservation topics, and celebrate the incredible biodiversity right in our own backyard.

No experience necessary. Just bring your curiosity.

What We Do

Group Hikes & Field Trips
We explore local trails, state parks, nature preserves, and wildlife refuges throughout the year. Outings are open to all skill levels and are a great way to learn from experienced naturalists while getting outside.

Plant & Animal Identification
Learn to recognize the species sharing your neighborhood. From oaks and orchids to wading birds and reptiles, our members are always happy to share what they know — and to geek out over a good find.

Community & Connection
At its core, GNS is about people who love nature finding each other. Come to one event and you'll leave with new knowledge, new friends, and probably a list of places you want to go back to.
